October moments

Hi friends,

October is a sleepy month for a lot of people, but not for me. We’ve got birthdays, Halloween (my favorite holiday of all time), and this year, we’ve even got a book launch. And that doesn’t even count an apple picking trip, if we can swing it.

Whether your October is the calm before the holiday storm comes or as jam-packed as mine, I hope you can take a minute to appreciate it.

Here are three things I’m enjoying this October:

  1. Small acts of bravery. My kid just started a new school that is significantly bigger than his last. Every day we ask him to do something new: a new routine, a new afterschool program, a new holiday camp, etc. And every day, he rises to the occasion with a smile on his face. That’s not to say he enjoys every experiment, or that it’s easy-peasy to adjust — he will tell us when something doesn’t land, and we recognize when he gets drained from all that newness. But his openness to trying new things is such a gift. It’s a reminder that we can do hard things, even when it feels uncomfortable. When was the last time you did something new? Had to be brave, even if only in small way? This October, I am reminding myself to take a cue from my kiddo and try new things, to be brave in ways big and small, everyday.
  2. Sweater weather. As someone who runs cold, I frequently feel perpetually over- or underdressed. But not in October. It’s crisp and cool enough for a sweater, but warm enough that you don’t need to fully bundle up. You probably don’t even need a jacket! These days are numbered, so I’m trying to enjoy them as much as I can. May your sweater weather days be filled with cozy knits and patterns galore.
  3. The Life Audit. As I prepare for launch day, it’s been so gratifying talking with friends and family and hearing how the life audit fits into their world. It’s there for the high school senior trying to figure out where to apply to college, for the new parent navigating a postpartum career change, and for the recent retiree wondering how to spend their newfound time. It’s a yearly planning tool, a space for dreaming big, a moment to sit back, reflect, and ask ourselves: What do I want from my one, true, beautiful life? I’m so excited to share this with you all soon. You can get your signed copy here.

📚 What I’m reading

  • The Confession, Jessie Burton. I picked this up at a used bookstore while traveling earlier this summer. Part of the joy of buying books abroad is that you really don’t know what you’re going to get. Sure, you’ll see that some of your favorite bestselling authors are crushing it abroad too, but you also get to discover new authors. So it was that I came upon The Confession, a novel about a young woman in search of her mother — but it’s so much more than that. It’s a story about writing and creativity, love and partnership, coming of age and making a home. I drank it up.
